Lorton Landfill

Variously called the Lorton Dump, the I-95 Sanitary Landfill and, now, the I-95 Solid Waste and Resource Recovery Collection Point, such is the evolution of the language-for good reason: All Fairfax County trash is now either recycled or burned.

Located at 9850 Furnace Road, Lorton, this incinerator is the destination for virtually all non-recycled trash in Fairfax County.

Operates every day except some public holidays, M-F 7:00 am to 6:00 pm, Sat to 4:00 pm, Sun to 2:00 pm.

Household hazardous waste section is open only on Thursdays 8:00 am to noon, Fridays 1:00 to 5:00 pm and Saturdays 9:00 am to 4:30 pm. Batteries, tires, anti-freeze and used motor oils can be dropped off at any time. There is no charge for disposal of these items except for tires (a single charge of $2 for 1 to 5 tires) and for commercial hazardous wastes (which is beyond the scope of these notes.) For more information see HAZARDOUS WASTE.

Trash disposal fees are quite reasonable and some are further reduced for seniors.

Recycling of your household refuse does not incur charges.

Directions. Take Richmond Highway (Route One) south almost to the County line (if you cross the river you've gone too far), turning right onto Furnace Road (Route 611) at the Lazy Susan Dinner Theater. Take first left onto Landfill Drive and drive one mile to the fork in the road, bearing left into the complex. The staffed citizens' scales booth will be on your left.

Further information, see REFUSE AND RECYCLING.
