Parkway

There are now two parkways serving our area.

George Washington Memorial Parkway runs north from Mount Vernon 29 miles to the Beltway near the American Legion Bridge (Cabin John Bridge). The section from Alexandria south is also known as the Mount Vernon Memorial Parkway and, to the old-timers, "the Boulevard." The speed limit ranges from 25 to 45 m.p.h. and the U.S. Park Police do indeed issue tickets (see COURTS-U.S. DISTRICT) General information 285-2600. Park Police are not connected to the 911 system. Park Police 24-hour dispatch number is (202) 619-7310.

Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100) now runs west from Route One to Shirley Highway (Route 95) where (until the missing link is completed) you follow the signs to go north on Backlick Road and pick up the Franconia-Springfield branch of the Parkway (Route 7900) westbound just beyond the Fire Station. In a few miles, Route 7900 imperceptibly joins the main Fairfax County Parkway (Route 7100), which now runs in a northwesterly direction past FAIRFAX CITY* (take the Route 123 exit northbound) and the Fairfax GOVERNMENT CENTER* (take the Fair Lakes Parkway exit eastbound), and will eventually go all the way to the Dulles Toll Road.

Mount Vernon Parkway Classic is an annual event held the third Sunday of April, providing an opportunity to run, or walk, on the parkway without traffic.
